radiator relocating question - Yamaha Rhino Forum - Rhino Forums ...

The radiator gets jam-packed full of mud and crud when you ride deep. And since the oil cooler is situated in front of the radiator, it makes cleaning out all the fins very difficult.

A lot of guys are moving the radiator to between the headrests, and some are moving it to area near the air cleaner and laying it horizontal. Essentially, the factory spot is the worst possible spot for mud riding.

I am recently fully snorkeled but have not relocated the radiator. It is not summer time though. Come summer time in south Texas, the radiator needs to be clean. When the weather is 100 degrees and you're pulling a long mudhole wide open in low range at 3mph with deep tread tires, you will know real soon if you have cooling problems.

What happens on stock radiator setups is this...usually in this order as well:

1) Nose-diving into a deep hole pushes an ooze-like wave of mud into the front of the radiator
2) Mud from the front tires slings forward, coating the radiator from the backside
3) High load, low speed for extended periods creates massive heat
4) Mud bakes into the hot fins of the radiator making heat exchange almost nonexistant
5) The Rhino overheats

This is why you relocate the radiator. I know it's not a Rhino, but the principle is the same . You can see why mud packs the radiator from both sides, and hitting a few water puddles does noting to truly "clean out" the baked in mud.
