What is Radiator Bleeding?
For those of you who are in a rush of bleeding your radiator, you can skip reading this part. But it couldn’t hurt to know why bleeding your radiator is necessary, because you may need to do it quite regularly.
A radiator works by heating water in the coils so that it radiates the heat to the air in contact with it. While the water is heated, bubbles emerge to the top because air is light than water. Since water radiates heat much better than air, having displaced air instead of water diminished your radiator’s capacity. This is why the air inside the radiator should be let out.
How to We Know When the Radiator Needs Bleeding?
As said above, air is lighter than water so it rises to the top of the radiator. You can check whether your radiator needs bleeding by turning on the radiator and feel the top and bottom part of it. If the heat that both parts generate significantly differs, there’s air up there and it is time you bleed your radiator.
How to Bleed a Radiator
- Turn off the central heating system. You don’t want to burn yourself while doing this easy chore.
- Attach or fit the bleed key into the radiator’s bleed valve on the side or back of the radiator. You can buy a bleed key from any hardware store, or it might even come with the radiator when you bought it.
- Wrap a cloth at the connecting part of the bleed valve and key. Turn the key counterclockwise to turn on the valve for the unwanted air to hiss out. Wait until some water comes out of the valve to make sure all the air is gone.
- Turn the key clockwise to close the valve. Turn on the radiator and feel it whether it produces heat the way it is supposed to.
