As China’s middle-class becomes more affluent, it seeks the comfort and attractive contours that designer radiators can bring.
A number of design magazines, newspaper sections and commentators have recently noted the emergence this year of a new, mass-market range of designer radiators produced especially for the emerging Chinese middle-class market.
Chinese firm Sampux has been making domestic heaters for years, and had long harboured an ambition to manufacture a more classy radiator aimed at professionals and the higher-waged. Devised by Chinese design agency LKK Innovation with the task of coming up with something that fit the current vogue for minimalist décor, the DB2006M is its answer to the conundrum.
The oil-filled designer radiators are compact, square and stylish. The company said that they come in matt black because white was too prone to grime and often yellowed with age – as well as being seen as a smarter colour by focus groups.
The radiators perform well too. Although the surface area is smaller than other Sampux radiators, they produce just as much heat, thanks to hemispherical shapes embossed on the surface. They will set the Chinese consumer back 1,580 Renminbi (RMB), while other standard radiators tend to cost RMB 6-700. Sampux said that since the radiators were launched in November, they have sold over 8,000.
