Inert metals - Don't corrode when in contact with oxygenated water. Examples include stainless, copper and brass. Non-inert metals include mild steel, cast iron and aluminium and tend to be used on central heating systems with corrosion inhibiting chemicals per BS 7593: 2006.

Subscribing to nipple - a sheet metal collar with opposing strings at each end, which acts like an internal nut and is utilized for joining radiator sections together.

Lockshield - A valve that's used to restrict your flow of water over the return side of a radiator in order to "balance" the radiator to the system. Valves usually come being a pair and the "lockshield" valve comes along with either a "thermostatic" or "manual" regulate valve. See also "Return" together with "Balancing. "

Handbook radiator valve - Act simply like taps because they directly control the flow of water into a radiator and consequently precisely how hot the radiator obtains, regardless of the neighboring room temperature. Manual valves have virtually no labelled settings - just turn the valve head before radiator is giving the amount of heat desired.

Mean mineral water temperature (MWT) : The mean temperature with the water in a central heating system. For example; a system operating at 90-70-20C can have a mean water environment of 80C

Microbore(broiling) - pipe that is only 10mm and 8mm in diameter that is narrower than the usual 15mm copper pipe and also traditional 22mm pipe.

Available System - an un-pressurized central heating system. Water is drawn into the system from the mains as soon as required via the enlargement tank. As water gets hotter and "expands" in the system, the excess water is usually released as necessary back in the expansion tank, which is usually, but not always found high up just a property. Also known for an open-vented system.

Pipe centre measurement - the measurement in the centre of one pipe to the centre of another pipe and the measurement from the wall to the centre of the pipe. This measurement is useful for installing pipework for a radiator; especially where pipework is usually to be installed before the radiator exists.
